Repo's Story
Repo is a southern sea otter, a threatened species found along the central coast of California, orphaned at six weeks of age. Sea otter pups typically stay with mom for six months to a year to learn critical survival skills.
When Repo arrived at The Marine Mammal Center our volunteers provided 24-hour care. Highly specialized care is required for sea otters, including an expensive diet of prawns, chopped clams, and whole squid. After six weeks at The Center, Repo was transferred to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to finish his rehabilitation with a surrogate sea otter mother. Once healthy, he was fitted with a radio transmitter and released back into the wild.
Thanks to dedicated recovery efforts, sea otters seem to be making a comeback in recent years. The Center is an important partner in recovery efforts, providing a critical space for rehabilitation of sick and injured sea otters.
