2018 Patient of the Year Nominee
Guadalupe fur seal Snaggle was found with brightly colored netting wrapped tightly around him. Weak and fatigued, he was on the brink of what would have been a devastating fate.
During his initial exam, our veterinarians noted Snaggle was severely underweight. The entanglement likely left him unable to swim well enough to catch food, and he could barely open his mouth.
Snaggle also had an injury on his front flipper where he was missing one of his “finger” bones and was diagnosed with anemia—a condition marked by a lack of red blood cells.
After being disentangled, Snaggle recovered quickly from his wounds, but it took a while to treat his anemia. Finally, after three months of care, blood tests showed that Snaggle was finally producing a normal number of red blood cells and was ready to return to his ocean home.
