Silkster's Story
Guadalupe fur seal pup Silkster was found extremely underweight and dehydrated on a beach in Bodega Bay. He weighed just 17 pounds, "barely over birth weight", despite being 10 months old. Because Guadalupe fur seals spend most of their lives in the open ocean, not much is known about them and their lives in the wild. Each animal we rescue gives us the opportunity to learn more about this threatened species and how to better care for them.
Silkster spent two months at our hospital, more than doubling in weight. When he was ready for release, Center researchers fitted him with a satellite tag to track his movements. This tag allowed researchers to collect invaluable data about Silkster, such as how often he surfaced and location estimates.
Silkster was released at Chimney Rock in Point Reyes National Seashore. His tag showed that he immediately headed north after being released, toward an area known to have productive waters that support abundant fish.
