In 2007, endangered humpback whale Delta and her calf Dawn traveled 75 miles up California's Sacramento River Delta - the longest known distance ever traveled by this species inland.  Unfortunately, fresh, warm river water is not good for marine mammals like whales, and many large ships in the river increased their risk of collision.

A rescue team led by the Center found that both whales had sharp, infected wounds on their backs from a ship strike.  Using a specially designed dart, our veterinary experts administered carefully measured doses of antibiotics to each whale.  This was the first time in history that antibiotics were administered to whales in the wild.

Within a day of treatment, both the mother and calf showed signs of healing and began their journey back to the open ocean.

Your support makes life-saving research and response work possible.  Thank you for your generous donation and for making a difference for whales like Delta and Dawn.
