Just a few days old and with no mother in sight, KP2, later renamed Hō'ailona, was rescued from a beach on the island of Kauai in 2008. This rare Hawaiian monk seal became the unofficial mascot for the mission to save this endangered species, of which only 1,300 seals currently remain. Few monk seal pups survive their first year due to threats like entanglement in ocean trash, declining fisheries, climate change and predation. The Marine Mammal Center's Hawaiian monk seal hospital and education center, Ke Kai Ola, is dedicated to the conservation of Hawaiian monk seals and their ocean home. We provide a pu'uhonua, or place of refuge, for sick, injured and orphaned seals.
